Laboratory experiments have shown that saw palmetto has a positive effect on benign prostatic hyperplasia, but a group of scientists decided to take it one step further and decided to test the effect of oral intake of saw palmetto on male pattern baldness in a pilot study involving men between the ages of 23 and 64.  The dose used was 400 mg per day, the equivalent to about 4 g of berry.  The double-blind results showed that 60% of the volunteers receiving active treatment noticed improvement, compared to only 11% for the placebo control group.

It is also possible that topical application may also be effective since it delivers a higher concentration of dose to the affected area.  A daily application at night could substantially improve the results of the clinical trial.
